the merging of old and new techniques and materials

News from graniph regulars 44flavours

Sebastian Bagge and Julio Rölle show a great knowledge and understanding of the vast extent of art in their work and find inspiration in the areas of Dada and Hip Hop. Their remix- and sample culture influences the development of their very own style, without making commitments to particular media. Thus, the name 44flavours not only stands for bizarre beautiful exhibitions throughout Europe but also for an idea evolving on a day to day basis in an atmosphere of creativity and freedom.

With their collection “old but new” 44flavours skilfully demonstrate the merging of old and new techniques and materials resulting in not only shirt motifs but also hand-made unique pieces like a desk, created in collaboration with the design studio “Ziben”, a bike made in cooperation with the custom bicycle shop “True Unique” (Kreuzberg) as well as the first official Dudes Factory Cap and much more.

Clemens Behr: Disorienting Architectures

Friends and collaborators 44Flavours (check here for their latest work with graniph) introduced us to a whole lot of great collaborators……..

German artist

Clemens Behr

uses the simplest materials to create

complex ephemeral architectures

, which fill gallery spaces with origami-like structures. Working with recycled materials and basic geometric forms, Behr dreams up installations that result in

subtle confusions

between 2D painting and 3D objects. Not content with the confines of gallery spaces, Behr has taken his work into the public sphere, building peculiar appendages in metro cars and erecting detailed miniature cities on street corners. At their best, his installations are

feats of optical trickery

, disorienting architectures reminiscent of German expressionist film sets. At their worst,

they look like a creative kid ran amok with a bunch of moving boxes and a vat of paint

. Behr belongs to a crop of artists, who take inspiration from childlike forms of expression, a naive, innocent aesthetic befitting a generation of Peter Pans…

Artists Unlimited is an artists association and art house that combines living and working under one roof since 1985. The project runs a gallery and a guest studio and has until now financed three-month-grants for 70 guest artists from all over the world. They live in the Artists Unlimited house – a former paper factory building – and exhibit their creations in the projects gallery. Such art funding by artists for artists is rare and has here produced a continuous cultural dialog between regional and international artists. Artists Unlimited is financed by its members and all common activities are done voluntarily.

"He once ate a plate of nachos bigger than his head"

Little Gonzales (Dan Gray) lives in Sydney and draws pictures – only because the voices in his head tell him to. A self-taught illustrator, he is a member of The Groop and has worked with clients including Graniph, Amelia’s Magazine, Dappled Cities, Old Man River, Daniel Johnston and Albert Music. He’s had his work featured by Semi Permanent, Frankie, Yen and Cleo and was shortlisted for the 2010 Qantas SOYA awards for Visual Communication.

Three interesting facts you may or may not know about Little Gonzales:
1. He is a triplet.
2. Once upon a time, he was going to be a doctor.
3. He once ate a plate of nachos bigger than his head.

His motto is ‘comparison is the fastest way to ruin happiness’. “I remind myself of it often in relation to my work – it’s very easy to be distracted and intimidated by the overwhelming amount of amazing illustrators and artists out there. This helps keep me focused! I think it’s a good bit of advice for life too, the grass is always greener, etc etc! I like to think of my work as pop illustration – I tend to use a lot of colour with a dash of my sense of humour.”

Here’s an interview he did for a great Sydney culture blog, Side Street Sydney: http://www.sidestreetsydney.com.au/2010/02/side-sight-little-gonzales.html

He’s recently been in London to do some study at Central St Martins. “An amazing college! I’ve been doing some animation as part of my classes, here’s a little video I made about growing up and staying young”

On TV:
“Lately I’ve been getting hooked on the tv show The Misfits – about a bunch of London teens who whilst doing community service, find themselves bestowed with superpowers after a freak storm. It’s a little strange and random, but I like the characters and it’s shot pretty well.”

On Music:
I love my music, couldn’t function without it. Lately I’ve been really loving the new Architecture in Helsinki and Lykke Li albums. Robyn’s Body Talk makes for a good soundtrack to my ‘London power strut’ and I can’t really be in London without listening to the Smiths, especially This Charming Man.
